A champion's daughter who lost her entire litter, then built plentiful fat anyway.

Fat Bear royalty doesn't guarantee an easy year. Born in 2018 to former champion 409 Beadnose, and sister to fellow contender 910, 909 arrived at Brooks River in early June with two spring cubs, her second known litter. One cub disappeared by the time the first pulses of salmon arrived. Then, at the end of July, while 909 fished the mouth of Brooks River, her last cub was killed by another mother bear, 806. Look for wide-set blond ears and brown late-summer fur.

Whether mother bears mourn is unknown, and we won't pretend otherwise. What is known: with winter drawing closer every day, 909 stayed motivated to prepare for hibernation, navigating the rest of the summer with determination and skill. The proof is in the padding: plentiful body fat. Hers is a year that began with hope, fell into complete loss, and is now bookended by resilience.
